Terry A. Rightnour
Terry
is a Professional Hydrologist with more than 35 years of experience in
water resource management. As a consultant to industry and public
agencies, he has completed assignments throughout the United States in
the areas of water quality management planning, watershed assessment,
stream and wetland restoration design, and constructed wetland
treatment design.
His work is focused on the development and application of
natural processes and ecology based technologies to meet water resource
protection, restoration, and management needs. Completed passive
wetland treatment systems have led to award winning sustainable designs
to treat leachate from coal combustion by-product landfills for the
electric utility industry. For the mining industry he has provided
designs for mine drainage abatement, abandoned mine land restoration,
and mine drainage water treatment.
His work in stream restoration and wetland mitigation includes
the application of new and emerging technologies for riparian habitat
creation, fluvial geomorphology based natural channel design, wetland
mitigation banking, and the abatement of acid deposition on high
quality streams.
He has been involved with the PA Growing Greener Program for
watershed restoration since its inception, providing watershed
assessment, planning, and design services to nonprofit conservation
groups. Through this work, he is involved with Penn State University on
cooperative research projects aimed at improving management tools and
new technologies for ecological restoration. This applied research
includes the development of empirical models on restoration costs and
measurable environmental benefits to guide the implementation of
watershed scale progressive restoration plans.
Terry has developed and taught environmental management and
compliance workshops for industry and government, and regularly
participates in university-based environmental education programs and
seminars on environmental management topics. He is a frequent author
and presenter of professional papers at national and international
symposiums and conferences.
He has received the Pennsylvania Game Commission’s Wildlife
Conservation Award for his work with acid rain mitigation and wetland
habitat creation; was awarded the Pennsylvania Association of
Environmental Professional’s Karl Mason Award for his leadership in the
environmental profession; and was selected as an Outstanding Alumnus by
the Penn State College of Agricultural Sciences for his accomplishments
in the field of environmental management.
